Purpose: The purpose of this virtual training is to review how to manage unemployment compensation liability and how to meet the legal responsibilities of employers.

Objectives: This class will not only provide the basic information about Michigan unemployment compensation administration but will provide participants with updated information about responding to unemployment claims during COVID and how to fight an erroneous or fraudulent claim made by a worker refusing to work for non-qualified reasons.

Who should attend: Individuals responsible for responding to Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) forms and/or handling unemployment insurance issues, including attending and participating in Administrative Law Hearings.

Learning Outcomes: 

Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  • Define the basics of the Wage and Record System – eligibility, qualifications, benefit duration, and weekly benefit amount
  • Complete common UIA forms and gain a deeper understanding as to what information is required and why
  • File effective protests and appeals
  • Prepare to meet the burden of proof in a “misconduct” case as defined by the courts
  • Identify who gets charged for the unemployment benefits paid
  • Understand the unemployment insurance tax rate
  • Understand and identify the information needed to win an Administrative Hearing and/or an appeal to the Michigan Compensation Appellate Commission.
  • Identify other unemployment insurance cost control tips
  • Become aware of recent changes in unemployment-related laws
